Into Madness is a series of thirteen photographic works that examine the emotional and physical toll of addiction, illness, and medical intervention. Drawing on her personal experience with heroin addiction, Hepatitis C, and the “cure” that nearly killed her, Evedon’s images reflect both the seduction of escape and the harsh realities that follow. Though her addiction lasted only a few years, its consequences have endured for four decades. Through her art, Evedon translates this journey into visual metaphors that confront trauma, survival, and the fragile hope of healing.
While trained in sculpture and metalsmithing, Evedon found that photography allows her to capture fleeting moments of synchronicity and construct layered realities that transcend time and space. Her work speaks to Lakota shaman Lame Deer’s belief that “the physical aspect of existence is only representative of what is real.” Her photographs often challenge perceived truths, offering multiple perspectives and exploring how trauma, memory, and spiritual inquiry intersect.
Evedon’s visual language moves between the political and the poetic. At times, her work confronts social issues directly; at others, it plays with composition and form to offer respite from external pressures. Both impulses are rooted in her belief—echoing Lame Deer—that many realities can coexist.
Recently, Evedon has been experimenting with alternative and 19th-century photographic printing processes. These hands-on techniques—simultaneously precise and intuitive—have opened new creative directions for her evolving practice.
Frani Evedon’s work has been featured in local, national, and international exhibitions and publications. A longtime exhibiting member of the Buffalo Society of Artists, she served in multiple leadership roles, including President, with her term concluding in 2022. In the 1980s and 1990s, Evedon was an original member of Ujima Theater Company, where she worked as portfolio photographer and in various theatrical capacities.
She also spent 27 years teaching visual art at Orchard Park High School, serving as department chair for 19 of those years, helping shape generations of young artists.
Into Madness is presented as part of Buffalo Arts Studio’s commitment to fostering dialogue around social justice, personal storytelling, and the transformative power of art.
