Application Process
The application process requires a resume or CV, an artist statement including social media and/or website addresses, 6-10 jpegs at 300 DPI, proof of income such as pay stubs, tax returns, and/or bank statements, and three personal or professional references whom the committee may contact via phone or email.
Please submit all Studio Artist applications as a single PDF to Buffalo Arts Studio Operations Manager Lauren McLaughlin at lauren@buffaloartsstudio.org by Friday, February 28, 2025. Applications with missing/omitted information will be considered incomplete.
Completed applications are reviewed by staff and a committee of current Studio Artists who determine which applicants to invite for interviews. After all interviews are completed, a panel of Studio Artists and staff work together to determine which applicant(s) will be invited to join the Buffalo Arts Studio community as a Studio Artist. We collect applications on a rolling basis to review when a space becomes available.
Review Process:
Studio Artists are selected through a peer-reviewed application and interview process. Reviewers will assess applicants based on the following criteria:
- Evidence of an active practice: Does the portfolio, CV, social media postings, and/or letters of recommendation speak to an active practice? Do these sources demonstrate the artist is regularly engaged in making artwork?
- Artistic Merit: Does the portfolio, CV, social media postings, letters of recommendation, and artist statement demonstrate a thoughtful practice? Does the work show an appropriate level of mastery?
- Process Compatibility: Do the media and methods employed by the artist comply with the safety standards of BAS? Can the materials be contained within the artist’s studio, especially one without doors?
- Interest in Community Contribution: Does the applicant have a skill or talent that they are willing to share with BAS? Would this skill fill a need for the organization? Does the artist’s schedule allow for meaningful participation?
- Networking/Outreach Potential: Is the artist part of communities and/or associations that could benefit BAS? Are they willing to connect these communities to BAS?
