Studio Artist Application
We anticipate at least TWO studios will be available in 2025. If you would like to apply to be a Buffalo Arts Studio Studio Artist, please complete the form at the bottom of this page.
A Community for Artists:
Buffalo Arts Studio creates community cultural connections through exhibitions, public art, and education programs while providing affordable studio space and public exposure for visual artists. Currently, Buffalo Arts Studio includes 30 Studio Artists as well as Aspire’s iXpress art program for individuals with developmental disabilities. Studio artists have access to a ceramics facility with a kiln room, computers, a kitchen, and our community space. Artists open their studios for tours, exhibition openings, and extended hours on the fourth Friday of each month.
Artists for a Community:
Studio Artists are an active part of the Buffalo Arts Studio community and are expected to contribute to the community in the following ways:
- Work in the studio regularly for at least 10 hours per week
- Attend at least six events and/or openings each year (usually the 4th Friday of each month)
- Complete and submit the Community Service Form and agree to assist in a variety of projects per year
- Attend artist meetings
- Participate in the interview process for prospective Studio Artists seeking to join the Buffalo Arts Studio community
- Volunteer at least 20 hours per year in the care and maintenance of shared and community spaces
Review Process:
Studio Artists are selected through a peer-reviewed application and interview process. Reviewers will assess applicants based on the following criteria:
- Evidence of an active practice: Does the portfolio, CV, social media postings, and/or letters of recommendation speak to an active practice? Do these sources demonstrate the artist is regularly engaged in making artwork?
- Artistic Merit: Does the portfolio, CV, social media postings, letters of recommendation, and artist statement demonstrate a thoughtful practice? Does the work show an appropriate level of mastery?
- Process Compatibility: Do the media and methods employed by the artist comply with the safety standards of BAS? Can the materials be contained within the artist’s studio, especially one without doors?
- Interest in Community contribution: Does the applicant have a skill or talent that they are willing to share with BAS? Would this skill fill a need for the organization?
- Networking/Outreach potential: Is the artist part of communities and/or associations that could benefit BAS? Are they willing to connect these communities to BAS?
The application process requires a resume or CV, artist statement, 6-10 jpegs at 300 DPI, proof of income such as pay stubs, tax returns, and/or bank statements, and three personal references. Please submit all Studio Artist applications as a single PDF to Buffalo Arts Studio Operations Manager Lauren McLaughlin at lauren@buffaloartsstudio.org. Applications with missing/omitted information will be considered incomplete.
Completed applications are reviewed by staff and a committee of current Studio Artists who determine which applicants to invite for interviews. After all interviews are completed, a panel of Studio Artists and staff work together to determine which applicant(s) will be invited to join the Buffalo Arts Studio community as a Studio Artist. We promote and encourage Studio Artist submissions through social, web-based, print media, and personal solicitations. We collect applications on a rolling basis to review when a space becomes available.
Rental Pricing:
When a studio becomes available, rent is calculated based on square footage. The price per square foot is based on the amenities of each space. Studio Artists license the use of raw studio space on a monthly basis and standard monthly fees cover administration support and common spaces. Studios are classified as follows:
- A+ private studio with windows and sink
- A private studio with windows
- B+ semi-private studio with window
- B private (no window) or non-private with window
- C no window, no door
Additional categories may be added depending on reconfiguration of spaces.
