Explore technical and emotional construction of head and shoulder portraiture in charcoal and paint. The first couple of weeks we will work on proportions, planar construction, and individual features from common source digital content. We will gain familiarity with charcoal and a limited oil or acrylic paint palette. In the middle of the course, each student will choose a photo of their own from which to create a charcoal or painted portrait using best compositional practices. The last two weeks of the course, we will have a model from which to create live portraits. We will learn different strategies for dealing with working from a living model, while also continuing to refine our material techniques. Each day, the instructor will complete a demonstration and offer individual, hands-on assistance. A supply list will be provided. All participants must be vaccinated and wear masks.
