Van Tran Nguyen, Strange Agency, April 28-June 2, 2017

“No event in American history is more misunderstood than the Vietnam War. It was misreported then, and it is misremembered now. Rarely have so many people been so wrong about so much. Never have the consequences of their misunderstanding been so tragic.”

Richard Nixon

No More Vietnams, 1985

Van Tran Nguyen is child raised by the memory of war, experiencing a trickle-down-trauma.┬áThis trauma is a defining theme in Nguyen’s work, and as a result, she invests in researching the past. She searches for ways that the past burdens the present through pathways of gender and race. Her current work points out ways that western institutions embody the tragedies that have been inflicted on her country, and redirects the gaze to subvert western memory in eastern spaces.
