Jozef Bajus, Gold Rush
Kurt Treeby, Re-Model
Bajus’ exhibition, Gold Rush, makes sculpture out of the debris of contemporary culture. His work imagines another future for that which is too often discarded. He rejects the notion that the act of “disposal” ends one’s societal obligation. By investigating the production processes of Tri-Main Center businesses as well as the refuse from such production, Bajus constructs original objects that bring new understanding to the possibilities that lie within what is too often discarded.
Treeby’s exhibition, Re-Model, comments on contemporary production and consumption. His fiber work focuses on iconic structures and imagery and the connection between so-called “high” and “low” art forms. His latest body of work meticulously re-creates some of the region’s once abandoned landmarks, including the Larkin Building and Tri-Main Center, in plastic canvas and yarn. Serving as both sculpture and tissue dispenser, these objects call attention to how easily communities can deem something “disposable.”
The event will include light refreshments provided by Ashker’s on Elmwood and The Lunch Box. A donation-based bar will include wine, beer, and soft drinks.
