For Craft Art Field Day, Hoover looks back to her first art making experiences for inspiration. Playing with beloved toys, learning how to crochet with her Grandmother, and stringing beads in summer camp are all fodder for Hoover’s new fiber based works.
Craft Art Field Day aims to reclaim the sense of community invoked by craft art—be it in the process of group activity, or the cross-generational teaching and learning, or quite simply in the playful joy of making something. The exhibit builds on the goals of Buffalo Arts Studio’s Project Space Initiative (PSI), which aims to highlight the dynamic process of artists and art making while engaging new audiences in diverse and meaningful ways.
Built into the exhibit are interactive artworks where visitors can try their hands at textile art making. Visitors will have the opportunity to embroider on a large tapestry table, weave on a giant “potholder” loom or try their hand at making a small weaving. Buffalo Arts Studio is the perfect venue to mount a wide ranging exhibit of textile art because of the industrial environment as well as their ongoing commitment to exhibit work that reflects the cultural diversity of the region, commitment to arts education and support of emerging and established artists.

In conjunction with the exhibit Craft Art Field Day, Hoover invites visitors into the process with a series of hands-on activities derived from her own practice. The artist will be onsite to discuss her process and guide visitors through their own craft art field day using processes similar to those Hoover employs in her work.
